The American Radio Relay League‘s (ARRL) Worked All States Award is perhaps the most prestigious and sought after domestic award. Working all 50 states of the United States is no small feat. It’s even more of a challenge when Hams outside of the US attempt it.
The WAS program is rich with enhancements for working all states with specific modes or bands. There’s even a special award for working all states with the three main mode categories. The Triple Play Award acknowledges Hams who work all 50 states using CW, Phone and Digital and modes. That amounts to 150 total contacts needed.
Triple Play is a meta award. You earn it by achieving WAS using each of the three mode categories separately. After completing those goals then you can request the Triple Play award certificate.
All contacts must be confirmed via Logbook of the World (LoTW). LoTW is also the mechanism used to submit WAS applications. That means there’s no need to collect and ship QSL cards in the mail.
The certificate comes in a US standard letter size, vertically aligned. It displays the three mode categories the operator used to make contact displayed in a baseball diamond pattern. As of 2023, the Triple Play certificate costs $20 when shipped within the US and $25 abroad. LoTW submission fees are extra. For an additional fee, you can also request a plexiglass plaque version of the award. See the Triple Play website for the latest details.
